(pun intended)

I have been working diligently on getting a press to handstand from an L sit. I have been occaisionally able to do it in the past but have been working on developing the strength to get it consistently. I recently discovered I can do a bent arm straddle press from an L sit on rings. I was wondering if that's helpful towards developing a straight arm press. (It's fun to actually be able to do a press, in any case.)

I'm also working straight arm negatives to a straddle L (on parallelettes), and positives in the range I can do (from L sit up to a block and up from a piked stand w/ my feet below my hands). My flexibility is pretty poor for this move (I can sit about 45 deg forward in a pancake stretch on a good day), but I'm working on it.

This skill is coming very slowly, so any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Learning a bent arm press will help you get a solid bent arm press. The engagement and push is significantly different for a straight arm press. A straight arm press handstand on rings is much more difficult than on parallettes. Really focus on compression. Keep your legs close to your body until the very end of the movement. Hips up and shoulders open before anything else. Working negatives helps a lot, but be sure to keep your hips high, bring your legs down completely then settle into the L or straddle L.
